Venue

The XVIII International Colloquium on Mechanical Fatigue of Metals (ICMFM XVIII) will be organized in 2016 by the Engineering School of the University of Oviedo in Gijón. This town has a population of nearly 280.000 and is located in the middle of Asturias, at seaside (Atlantic coast) in the northern coast of Spain. It has three large and sandy beaches, a marina with an enviable location, right in the center of the city, next to the historic district of Cimadevilla, authentic Roman baths, an arqueological nature park and many other places worth to visit. The site of the Conference will be placed at the Universidad Laboral, a monumental complex built in the mid-20th century.

Almost a third of the territory of Asturias has been declared a Protected Natural Area of special interest. The true force of Asturias is its scenery, its countryside formed by the presence of beautiful mountains that rise 2500 m, along with nearly 100 km of rugged formidable coastline, with natural amphitheatres and eye-catching fishing towns.

How to reach Gijón:

By plane: Asturias Airport is located 40 km. from Gijón and is connected with the main national airports (Madrid and Barcelona) and several international destinations.

Currently, Easyjet has direct flights from Asturias to London (1 flight per day) and Geneve (1 flight per week, summer season). While TAP Portugal offers direct flights from Lisbon and Vueling directly connects Asturias with Paris (Charles de Gaulle airport). Negotiations between the autorities and several international airlines are currently taking place and therefore, this paragraph will be updated with new destinations as soon as possible.

Other interesting option involves landing in Santander Airport (174 km. from Gijón) and taking a bus (either from the airport or from the city center of Santander, check prices and timetables in the company website ALSA). Ryanair directly links Santander Airport with Frankfurt, Düsseldorf (Weeze airport), Brussels (Charleroi Airport), Dublin, Bergamo, Roma, Edinburgh, Beauvais and London. Other international airports close to the Conference venue are Bilbao (276 km.), A Coruña (275 km.) or Santiago de Compostela (288 km.). ALSA connects by bus Gijón and the city center of Bilbao, A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, one could also travel to Gijón from those destinations by train (prices and timetables available in RENFE).

Also, Asturias Airport has very frequent connections with both Madrid (Barajas Airport) or Barcelona (El Prat Airport), being both major international airports with plenty of international flights.

If you want to come from UK, there are two routes by ferry: from Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander (176 km far from Gijón, about 2 hrs.) with four sailings a week.
